DJ Akademiks Warns Ish and Ice About Marc Lamont Hill's 'Hostile Takeover' of the Joe Budden Podcast

Akademiks says Marc Lamont Hill is quietly taking over the JBP, and Ish and Ice need to step up before they become background characters on their own show.

DJ Akademiks is looking out for his people — even on a podcast he's not a part of.

During a recent livestream, the hip-hop media personality issued a warning to Ish and Ice, co-hosts of The Joe Budden Podcast, about what he sees as a "hostile takeover" by their newest cast member: former CNN commentator Marc Lamont Hill.

The Rise of Marc Lamont Hill

If you've watched the JBP over the past year, it's hard to miss the shift. Hill, who joined the podcast's expanding roster alongside Ish, Ice, Parks, and Mona from Don't Call Me White Girl, has quickly become one of the show's biggest draws.

His intellectual range is undeniable. Political debates, cultural commentary, music history, sports analysis — Hill dominates every lane he enters. Fans have gravitated toward his energy, and his segments consistently generate the most engagement online.

But according to Akademiks, that rise comes at a cost — specifically, at the expense of Ish and Ice's screen time.

Akademiks Sounds the Alarm

Despite having officially squashed his own beef with Marc Lamont Hill, Akademiks says he felt compelled to speak up for Ish and Ice, two members of the cast he considers favorites.

His observation is simple: every time a new topic comes up, Hill is the first to speak. And once he does, Ish and Ice barely get a word in. The dynamic, Ak argues, is a far cry from the energy they brought when they first replaced Rory and Mal.

"It feels like a hostile takeover," Akademiks said on stream, urging Ish and Ice to step up their game and assert themselves more in the conversation before they become afterthoughts on their own show.

Is He Wrong?

Here's the thing — Akademiks isn't saying Hill is bad for the podcast. In fact, the consensus among fans is that his addition has been overwhelmingly positive. The intellectual depth he brings is exactly what the JBP needed to evolve beyond its comfort zone.

But Ak's point isn't about quality. It's about dynamics. A podcast thrives on balance — when one voice consistently dominates, even a brilliant one, the show starts to feel more like a guest lecture than a roundtable.

Ish and Ice were brought in to be full co-hosts, not supporting characters. And if they're not careful, Akademiks warns, that's exactly what they'll become.

Whether you agree with Ak's framing or think he's stirring the pot, the underlying observation resonates with a growing segment of JBP listeners who've noticed the same shift. Marc Lamont Hill isn't taking over because he's scheming — he's taking over because he's prepared. The question is whether the rest of the cast will match his energy, or quietly fade into the background.

As Akademiks sees it, the clock is ticking.
