Capcom just reminded the entire industry why Resident Evil is one of the most powerful franchises in gaming.

Resident Evil Requiem has sold over 5 million copies in less than a week since its February 27 launch, making it one of the fastest-selling entries in the series' 30-year history. The game is dominating on PS5, PC, and is notably one of the first major third-party titles on the Nintendo Switch 2, where it moved nearly 39,000 physical units in Japan alone during launch week.

The numbers tell a story of a franchise that refuses to slow down. Capcom's marketing strategy was surgical - drip-feeding reveals, leveraging nostalgia while pushing the series forward, and launching at a time when the competition is still warming up for the year.

Critics have praised Requiem for its balance of classic survival horror tension with modern gameplay mechanics. The PS5 version runs at a locked 60fps with ray-traced reflections, while the Switch 2 port has impressed players with how close it gets to the home console experience.

For context, Resident Evil Village took about a month to hit similar numbers. Requiem did it in days. With GTA 6 still months away and no other major AAA competition this month, Capcom essentially had the entire stage to itself - and absolutely owned it.
