Shirley Chung's Incredible Comeback: From Stage 4 Cancer to Winning the Chef Showdown at SOBEWFF
Chef Shirley Chung went from a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis to winning SOBEWFF's Chef Showdown alongside Tobias Dorzon, who survived being shot 11 times.
Two years ago, chef Shirley Chung was diagnosed with Stage 4 tongue cancer and didn't know if she'd ever taste food again. Last week, she was serving pork belly baos on Miami Beach and winning the biggest culinary competition of the year.
Chung was part of Team Antonia Lofaso that won the Tournament of Champions LIVE at the 25th annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival - a star-studded event hosted by Guy Fieri featuring some of the biggest names in the food world.
'Nothing is stopping me now,' Chung told reporters at the event. 'I'm living fearlessly. I'm not saying no. I just want to live my full life and experience everything. I'm probably going to be even more extreme than before. Nothing's holding me back.'
Chung, who won Food Network's House of Knives in 2025 and recently opened her new restaurant Night Rooster in Dallas, wasn't the only chef writing a comeback story on the sand that night.
Her teammate Tobias Dorzon, who survived being shot 11 times in a 2024 armed robbery, stood proudly on stage as the winning team was announced. His Maryland restaurant Huncho House is back and thriving.
The SOBEWFF lineup also featured power couple Bobby Flay and Brooke Williamson, the Voltaggio brothers, and a surprise performance by hip-hop legend Rev Run that turned the whole event into a beach party.
Sometimes the best stories aren't just about food - they're about the people who refuse to quit.
